STAR*Works Policies
  1. Lab Use
The intent of the lab is to provide assistance with projects working in the Office Suite software. It is not a general-purpose computer lab where students can simply work on a project using Word or other Office Suite software; Academic Lab computers are available for that. Come to STAR*Works if you need help.
The lab does not support any kind of programming. Please check with your instructors for labs that support programming.

  2. Software
The software supported in STAR*Works is the Office Suite, which includes Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint. Two computers will continue to carry Office 97. We also have Textbridge Pro and Photoshop 5.0, to support scanning. The browser software available includes Netscape Communicator 4.7 and Explorer 5. In addition, we have an FTP program (WS FTP) and Norton Anti-virus loaded on all the computers.

  3. Computer Security
It is against STAR's policy to load any software on, or copy programs from, these computers. Anyone violating this policy will lose the privilege of using the lab.
In addition, do not save files on these computers. You must bring your own storage media with you. STAR*Works is not responsible for any files saved on the desktop or hard drive.

  4. Problems
Any time you work with technology, problems will arise. Report any problem to the mentor on duty.

  5. Copyright Policy
Do not violate copyright and "Fair Use" laws. Royalty-free graphics are available from the STAR labs (check with the mentor on duty). Copyrighted materials on the web are considered "intellectual property." Follow directions given on a web site for use of graphics or other materials, or contact copyright holders to get permission to use their copyrighted material. For more information, please check the following: DoIT Copyright Basics or GMU Copyright Information.

  6. Mentor Responsibilites
Mentors are there to assist you with problems you encounter with your projects, they are not there to do the work for you.

  7. Food Not Allowed
Food and drink will not be allowed near the computers. You may have drinks with lids but they must be kept on the floor or away from working surfaces.

  8. Supervisor
The supervisor will check on the lab periodically throughout the day. If you have questions or need to contact the STAR*Works supervisor, you may call 993-3988 or come to JC 229 between the hours of 10-5 daily.
