STAR*T Policies
  1. Training The more time a student has for learning a new software package or video-related skill, the better the success of the project.

Any student requesting training will be asked to provide a time line for the completion of the project that is driving his/her request. Training, at various learner levels, can begin immediately. Understanding can only come with time and practice.

The escalation of training offerings is as follows, from most immediately available to least immediately available:

    • A handout or course materials
    • A user guide (if available through STAR)
    • A training video
    • A mentoring session
    • A regular workshop
    • A special topic workshop

  2. Lab Use When not used for workshops or other types of training, the STAR*T lab is available to any GMU student working on a multi-media project. While we have facilities for scanning and web page production, we are sometimes short of spaces. We may suggest students use STAR for scanning and web.STAR for web page production.

  3. Do not change the configuration of the computers in any way or load software onto them.

  4. Do not save your work on a STAR*T computer and expect it to be there when you come back. No matter what a mentor can do, computers can fail at any time and computer maintenance often requires rebuilding the disk drive. This process deletes all data files.

  5. Report any problems with computers or other equipment to a lab mentor or supervisor.

  6. Copyright Policy: Do not violate copyright and "Fair Use" laws. Royalty-free graphics are available from STAR. Copyrighted materials on the web are considered "intellectual property". Follow directions given on a web site for use of graphics or other materials, or contact copyright holders to get permission to use their copyrighted material. For more information, please check the following: DoIT Copyright Basics or GMU Copyright Information

  7. Please do not bring food or drink into the lab. Water may kept beside you for your use as long as it is stored in covered containers or lidded bottles.

  8. Mentor can help you by answering questions, directing you to workshops and resources, and referring you as needed. They may not do any part of your project.
