STAR Center Technology Use Policies

Access to these facilities is a privilege, not a right. Please respect the facility, the technology and the staff, and operate the machines in accordance with the following principles:

  1. Food: Do not bring open containers of food or beverage to the workstations. A drink with a lid or cap is permissible as long as it is kept on the floor, not on the desk or workspace.

  2. Noise: Please don't shout, talk loudly or otherwise disturb the creative efforts of others working in the lab; turn down the volume, or use earphones if you are working with sound.

  3. Settings: Under no circumstances are students to change the system settings or wiring setups for machines without conferring with a mentor or staff member. Do not mess with drivers, hookups or other key components of these machines. Do not download or install software on any of these machines.

  4. Printing: Users are limited to 30 pages of printing, and any standard word processing, PowerPoint or other office suite files should be printed out of Academic Labs or elsewhere. Do not print multiple copies. Color printing can be purchased through STAR Services.

  5. Storage: Student work may not be stored on these computers. Purchase of a 100 MB Zip Disk ($10.00 at the computer or book store in the Johnson Center) gives individuals ample storage space for most projects. Any files left on computer desktops or hard drives will be deleted.

  6. E-mail/Web Surfing/Games: Please do not check e-mail, surf the Web or play computer games in any of the STAR labs.

  7. Copyright: These machines are not to be used to violate or infringe copyrights. Commercial images and text are copyrighted, and their use by students at an educational institution does not mean that the educational fair use doctrine automatically applies. Go to http://www.doiiit.gmu.edu/copyright.htm for more information about copyright; Frequently Asked Questions about the GMU Security Review Panel are available at http://www.gmu.edu/srp/faqs.html

  8. MP3: MP3 music files are not allowed on STAR Center computers. Use as part of a creative project must be pre-approved by a mentor or a staff member.

  9. Responsible Computing Policy: Individuals must abide by University rules regarding the responsible use of computers, including respecting privacy, using computers for educational priorities, and abiding by relevant legal guidelines.
